February 2nd, 2011 - Europe Show Review
I just returned from the first round of European Shows – Pitti, BBB, Premium, Who’s Next and Premier Vision and would like to fill you in on some of the happenings.
One of the first very important observations from all of the shows was the steady increase in attendance from the retail and e-business networks. Schuhkurier in Germany gave the BBB at 70% attendance from outside Germany and the attendance “significantly increased” according to Karl-Heinz Muller the President. The Premium and Pitti was also very busy however attendance has not been announced. Pitti increased attendance by 7% over last winter show! Who’s Next and Premier Vision have not been announced however it is surely to have been a record for them as well.
These fairs are interesting presentations because the show authorities do not allow brands to exhibit unless they have a compelling brand and product presentation and their stands are decorated appropriately. They don’t allow the old style decorations of white walls, shelves and chairs. It is also a challenge and somewhat difficult to enter into most of these shows. You must prove who you are, what you do and for whom. Just ask Natalie Miller from Koolaburra!
Footwear was a continuance of the “retro boot” look in leather and rubber combinations. Lots of wool and shearling linings with brands like No Brand, Clarks, Fly London, Sorel, UGG and Koolaburra featuring the warmth factor. As some parts of the US, Europe has experienced a very snowy and cold winter so far. This has been very important for retailers. Membrane and water-repellent with some insulation have been strong with the outdoor brands like Merrel and Timberland focusing on both warmth and water repellency. In the sneaker areas there were many high tops with warm linings and even Converse with a waterproof sneaker!
The next rounds of shows are the GDS, Micam, Pure, White Milan and Tranoi. The first two are the traditional sort of boring shoe shows with some areas of attractive new innovations and designs.
If you want to see a powerful statement of a show go the schukurier.de issue 28 January page 14 & 15. This was the entrance to the BBB on the first day opening!
I have only seen this at a playoff game with the Celtics playing in Boston and a concert of the Rolling Stones!
